When is Ganesh Chaturthi 2026?

The Ganesh Chaturthi in 2026 will be celebrated on Monday, September 14, marking the commencement of a ten-day long festival of Ganeshotsav. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon) in the month of Bhadrapada as it marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is the elephant-headed god of wisdom and prosperity, or the Vighnaharta, the remover of all obstacles.

Hence, the whole day of September 14, 2026, will fall under the Chaturthi Tithi and is considered the most appropriate time for Sthapana and Puja, irrespective of when you do your puja on that day.

As per the tradition, the Ganeshotsav continues for ten full days. But not all people follow this pattern. Although the traditional festival continues for ten days, the festivals conducted for one and half days (Dhed Diwsacha Ganapati) and even for a single day are also entirely valid and practiced by many people.

A Note on Environmentally-Friendly Celebration

As the significance of visarjan is gradually growing, the question about the materials used to make the idol arises. The idols made from Shadu Mati (the clay) dissolve entirely and safely in water, whereas those made of Plaster of Paris do not and may release toxic substances into the water.
