Carpet weaving as an art was introduced in India during the Mughal period. Almost 500 years later, handmade carpet-weaving has become a much more obscure craft, performed by a small community of artisans scattered across some belts in India – their knowledge a legacy of the generations past. Traditionally, Mughal carpets were based on designs originally from Persia (now called Iran) and till today, they still retain some of the same artistic flair, signatures, names and genres of that period. India, by the virtue of its historical heritage, has always been a rich amalgamation of various cultures - embracing people of many races, some of whom invaded to plunder, but stayed on to make India their home. The Pathans of Ghazni (Now Afghanistan) and the Mughals from Uzbekistan (Samarkand) are typical examples of races that settled in India and ruled a great part of erstwhile-undivided India. Today, India has become a source of lively architecture/ cultural designs, owing to the confluence of religions and cultures.
